In a significant development for India's representation on the global financial stage, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Mr. Parameswaran Iyer as India's Executive Director (ED) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington D.C. This move comes as Mr. Iyer currently serves as the Executive Director at the World Bank, a position he has held since December 2022.
A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Mr. Parameswaran Iyer, a 1981-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, brings a wealth of experience to this crucial international role. He is widely recognized for his pivotal leadership in implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission (Clean India Mission), the ambitious nationwide sanitation campaign launched by the Government of India. His tenure as Secretary in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation was marked by significant progress in improving sanitation coverage across the country, a feat that garnered international acclaim.
Before his current role at the World Bank, Mr. Iyer also served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, the premier policy think tank of the Government of India. His journey includes voluntary retirement from the IAS in 2009 to join the World Bank's water and sanitation initiatives, showcasing his long-standing commitment to development issues, particularly in the water and sanitation sector. He returned to India in 2016 to spearhead the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Role and Responsibilities at the IMF
Mr. Iyer's appointment at the IMF is for a tenure of three years, starting from the date he assumes charge, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. He will succeed Dr. Krishnamurthy Venkata Subramanian, whose term concludes soon. As Executive Director, Mr. Iyer will represent a constituency comprising India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka on the IMF's Executive Board. This board is responsible for conducting the day-to-day business of the IMF, including discussing country-specific issues, global economic surveillance, and policy decisions that impact the international financial system.
His extensive experience in navigating complex administrative challenges, policy formulation, and large-scale project implementation within India, combined with his international exposure at the World Bank, positions him well to advocate for the interests of India and the South Asian region within the IMF framework. This appointment underscores India's commitment to playing an active and influential role in global economic governance.
Looking Ahead
Mr. Iyer's transition from the World Bank to the IMF marks a continuation of his service in key international financial institutions. His deep understanding of development economics, sanitation infrastructure, and public policy will be invaluable as the IMF addresses pressing global challenges like post-pandemic recovery, climate change financing, and debt sustainability. His leadership is expected to further strengthen the voice of developing economies within the Fund.
This appointment is seen as a strategic move, placing a seasoned administrator and development expert in a critical position to influence global economic policies. We wish Mr. Iyer success in his new role representing India and its neighbouring countries at the IMF.
